About Hash Generator
A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of data: the same input always produces the same hash, and even one changed letter produces a completely different one. Developers use hashes to verify downloads, store passwords safely, and check that a file was not altered.
This page generates MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes from text or files, entirely in your browser. For security, SHA-256 or SHA-512 are the right choice today; MD5 is kept because many older checksum lists still use it.
How to use it
- Type text, or pick a file to hash.
- Press Generate hashes.
- Copy any hash next to its name.
Frequently asked questions
Which hash algorithm should I use?
SHA-256 or SHA-512 for anything security-related. MD5 and SHA-1 are older and no longer trusted for security, but they are still common for simple file checksums.
Why does the same input always give the same hash?
That is the point of a hash: it is deterministic. Change even one character and the hash changes completely, which is how tampering is detected.
Can a hash be reversed to get my text back?
No. Hashing is one-way. That is why passwords are stored as hashes instead of plain text.
Is my text or file uploaded?
No. Hashing runs entirely in your browser, including file hashing.
