The Social Security payment schedule 2027 at a glance

Every Social Security payment in 2027 follows one of five tracks. Retirement, SSDI and survivors benefits are paid on a Wednesday set by the birth date on the benefit record: the 1st–10th are paid on the second Wednesday, the 11th–20th on the third Wednesday, and the 21st–31st on the fourth Wednesday. SSI is paid on the 1st of the month, and two groups — people who started Social Security before May 1997, and people who receive both Social Security and SSI — are paid on the 3rd. When a scheduled date falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, the payment is issued on the preceding business day instead: earlier, never later. Here is the complete Social Security payment schedule 2027, with all of those shifts already applied:

Still to come in 2026: November and December

Two quirks are left in 2026. In November, the second Wednesday (the 11th) is Veterans Day, a federal holiday — so the born-1st–10th group is paid a day early, on Tuesday, November 10. And November's SSI payment already arrived on Friday, October 30, because November 1 was a Sunday; there is no SSI deposit inside November itself. December runs normally, then the first 2027 payments land on December 31, 2026 (January's SSI and 3rd-of-month payments, moved up because January 1 is a holiday and January 3 a Sunday).

How the Wednesday rule works

The Wednesday your check arrives is set by one birth date: the worker's. For your own retirement or SSDI benefit, that is your birthday. For a spouse, widow or widower benefit paid on someone else's record, it is their birthday, not yours — the most common reason a payment lands on an unexpected Wednesday. The rule has applied to everyone who started benefits in May 1997 or later. Claim earlier than that, and you keep the older arrangement: the 3rd of every month, the same date SSI-plus-Social-Security households use for the Social Security part (their SSI still arrives on the 1st).

Why a payment sometimes arrives on a Tuesday — or in the wrong month

Social Security never pays on a weekend or a federal holiday. When your scheduled date is one, the payment moves to the preceding business day. For Wednesday groups that usually means Tuesday (November 10, 2026 is the live example). For SSI and the 3rd-of-month group it can mean the last business day of the previous month — which is how a January payment lands on December 31, and how some months end up with two deposits while the next has none. It is the same monthly benefit, moved — never a bonus, and never a cut.

SSI in 2027: the two-payment months

Because the 1st of May and the 1st of August 2027 fall on a weekend, and January 1, 2028 is a holiday weekend, SSI households see two deposits in April, July and December 2027 (April 1 and 30; July 1 and 30; December 1 and 30) and no deposit inside January, May or August — those months' money arrived in the month before. Budgeting tip that matters: the second deposit in a two-deposit month is next month's rent money, not extra. The finder above flags these months for your own dates automatically.

Payment late? Check where you stand

Most "late" payments are simply early-shifted dates or slow bank posting. Use this checker with the same details as above — it compares this month's scheduled deposit with today and tells you whether you are still inside the SSA's waiting window or it is time to act:

The order the SSA itself recommends: wait 3 additional business days past the scheduled date, check with your bank (many post deposits later in the day, and early-deposit banks can move things the other way), then call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or sign in to your my Social Security account to see the payment status directly.

How much will the check be in 2027?

Dates are only half the question. The 2027 cost-of-living adjustment is 3.6%, announced in October 2026 — the first checks at the new rate are the ones paid from December 31, 2026 (SSI and the 3rd-of-month group) and the January 2027 Wednesdays. To turn that percentage into your own number, use our Social Security COLA Calculator 2027, and for the full story — including what happens to Medicare Part B — read How Much Will My Social Security Check Be in 2027?

Frequently asked questions

What day will my Social Security check arrive?

For most people, on a Wednesday set by the birth date on the benefit record: born 1st–10th, the second Wednesday of the month; 11th–20th, the third Wednesday; 21st–31st, the fourth Wednesday. SSI arrives on the 1st, and people who started benefits before May 1997 — or who get both Social Security and SSI — are paid on the 3rd. If the scheduled date is a weekend or federal holiday, the payment moves to the preceding business day.

When is my next Social Security payment?

It depends on your group. Use the finder at the top of this page: choose what you receive, enter the birth day if asked, and it shows your next deposit date with a live countdown. As an example of how it moves: in November 2026 the payment dates are November 3 (3rd-of-month group), November 10 (born 1st–10th — a day early for Veterans Day), November 18 (born 11th–20th) and November 25 (born 21st–31st), while November's SSI was paid early, on October 30.

What is the Social Security payment schedule for 2027?

The Wednesday dates for 2027 are: January 13, 20, 27; February 10, 17, 24; March 10, 17, 24; April 14, 21, 28; May 12, 19, 26; June 9, 16, 23; July 14, 21, 28; August 11, 18, 25; September 8, 15, 22; October 13, 20, 27; November 10, 17, 24; December 8, 15, 22 — in birthday-group order (1st–10th, 11th–20th, 21st–31st). SSI is paid on the 1st and the pre-1997 / dual-benefit group on the 3rd, each moved earlier when the date is a weekend or holiday. The full table, with those shifts applied, is on this page and in our Social Security Payment Schedule 2027 guide.

Do SSDI and survivors benefits follow the same payment schedule?

Yes. Retirement, SSDI (disability) and survivors benefits all use the same Wednesday-by-birthday schedule. One subtlety: for a benefit paid on someone else's work record — a spouse or survivors benefit — the Wednesday follows the worker's birthday, not the recipient's. SSI is the exception, with its own 1st-of-the-month schedule.

Why did my Social Security payment arrive on a Tuesday?

Because its Wednesday was a federal holiday. Social Security does not pay on holidays or weekends, so the payment moves to the preceding business day — usually Tuesday. The clearest recent case: the second Wednesday of November 2026 is Veterans Day (November 11), so everyone born on the 1st–10th was paid on Tuesday, November 10 instead.

Which months have two SSI payments in 2027?

Three months of 2027 see two SSI deposits: April (April 1 and April 30), July (July 1 and July 30) and December (December 1 and December 30). In each case the second deposit is the following month's payment arriving early because its 1st falls on a weekend or holiday — which also means January, May and August 2027 have no SSI deposit inside the month. It is a calendar shift, not extra money.

What should I do if my Social Security payment is late?

First, check the scheduled date for your group — many 'late' payments were simply moved earlier or are due later in the month. The SSA asks you to wait 3 additional business days past the scheduled date, then check with your bank, since posting delays are usually theirs. If the money is still missing, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or check the payment in your my Social Security account. The checker on this page tells you exactly where you stand this month.
