Why a real calendar beats a rough percentage
Articles will tell you every other weekend is “about 14%” and a 50/50 rotation is “about half the year”. Those averages hide the two things that actually decide your number: where the rotation lands on real dates, and holidays. A 2-2-3 that starts on a Friday does not produce the same year as one that starts on a Monday, and a parent whose 52 weekend overnights grow by alternating Thanksgivings, half of winter break and three weeks of summer is not on 14% at all — they are closer to 22%. Courts, mediators and child support worksheets count the real year. This tool does the same: it lays your rotation over the actual 12 months from your start date, applies every holiday and break you enter, and only then counts the nights. It is the combination the established tools keep behind an account or a print paywall: here the calendar, the count and the printout are all free.
The schedules, in one table
| Schedule | Overnights per 14 nights | Typical year | Exchanges |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-2-3 | 7 / 7 | 182–183 each (50%) | About 3 a week — the most |
| 2-2-5-5 | 7 / 7 | 182–183 each (50%) | About 2 a week |
| 3-4-4-3 | 7 / 7 | 182–183 each (50%) | About 2 a week |
| Week on / week off | 7 / 7 | 182–183 each (50%) | 1 a week — the fewest |
| Every other weekend | 12 / 2 | About 52 for Parent B (14%) | Every two weeks |
| About 70/30 | 10 / 4 | About 104 for Parent B (29%) | Weekends + a midweek night |
| About 60/40 | 8 / 6 | About 156 for Parent B (43%) | A long weekend every week |

How the counting works
An overnight is a night the child sleeps at a parent’s home (or in that parent’s care, for example on a trip). The calculator walks the 12 months day by day: nights inside a holiday or break you entered go to the parent you assigned; every other night follows the two-week rotation, which starts on your chosen start date with the parent you picked for the first night. An exchange is any day whose overnight parent differs from the day before. Percentages are overnights divided by the total nights in the period (365, or 366 when the period includes February 29). Because everything is counted on real dates, your totals are exact for the dates you entered — change a holiday and the numbers change with it.
Frequently asked questions
How do courts calculate parenting time percentage?
Most US courts and child support guidelines count overnights: the number of nights in a year the child sleeps at each parent's home, divided by 365 (366 in a leap year). The IRS uses the same nights test in Publication 501 to decide which parent is the custodial parent for tax purposes. California is the best-known exception — it measures timeshare in hours. This calculator counts overnights over a real 12-month calendar, which is why its numbers can differ by a night or two from the rough estimates in articles.
How many overnights is every other weekend?
About 52 overnights a year — two nights (Friday and Saturday) across 26 weekends — which is roughly 14% of the year. Stretch the weekend to Monday morning and it becomes about 78 overnights (21%, often called an 80/20 schedule). Add holidays and a summer block and the real total usually lands between about 73 and 88 overnights. This calculator counts your exact dates instead of the averages.
What is a 50/50 custody schedule in overnights?
182 or 183 overnights per parent per year. The common 50/50 rotations — 2-2-3, 2-2-5-5, 3-4-4-3 and week on/week off — all give each parent 7 of every 14 nights; which parent ends up with 183 depends on who has the first night of the year and on leap years. Holidays and school breaks then move the real number a few nights either way.
Do holidays and summer change the percentage?
Yes — sometimes a lot. A parent on an every-other-weekend base (52 overnights, 14%) who also gets alternating holidays and two to four weeks of summer can reach roughly 73–88 overnights (20–24%). That is why this tool applies your holiday and summer dates directly on the calendar before counting, instead of counting the rotation alone.
Can I print the custody calendar for my parenting plan?
Yes — printing is free, with no account and no watermark. Build your schedule, then use the Print button: the 12-month calendar prints in the parents' colours with exchange days marked, ready to attach to a parenting plan as the schedule exhibit or to put on the fridge. Many parents print two versions to compare at mediation.
Is this legal advice?
No. This is a planning and visualisation tool. Custody orders, holiday rules and counting conventions vary by state and by your court order, and some states average alternating holidays over two years. Take your printed calendar to a family-law attorney or mediator for anything you intend to file.
