What is a moon sign?
Your moon sign is the sign the Moon occupied at your exact birth moment. Where the sun sign is the self you are growing into, astrologers read the moon sign as the self you already are underneath: your emotional reflexes, your comfort needs, your instincts in private, and the way you look after yourself and the people you love.
The Moon is the fastest-moving body in the birth chart, crossing the whole zodiac in about 27 days and spending only two to two and a half days in each sign. That speed is why the moon sign feels so personal compared with the sun sign - and why your birth time sometimes matters. On a little over half of all days the Moon stays in one sign from midnight to midnight, and the date alone is enough; the calculator checks your whole birth day when you don't know your time, and shows both signs honestly on the days the Moon changed sign.

What is my moon sign if I don't know my birth time?
Often it can still be found. Tick "I don't know my birth time" and the calculator checks the Moon at the start and end of your birth day: on more than half of all days the Moon stays in one sign all day, and that is your moon sign whatever time you were born. If the Moon changed sign that day, you will see both possible signs, and only a birth time can settle it.
Why does the moon sign need a birth time when the sun sign doesn't?
Speed. The Sun changes sign about once a month, so a date is nearly always enough. The Moon covers 12 to 15 degrees a day - half a sign - so on roughly 160 days a year it crosses into a new sign mid-day, and the hour of birth decides which side you fall on.
How accurate is this moon sign calculator?
It uses the standard Meeus lunar algorithm, which agrees with professional ephemerides to within a fraction of a degree. The realistic weak point is not the maths but the input: a birth time remembered wrong by several hours can flip the sign on a change-over day, which is why the calculator warns you when your Moon is near a sign edge.
What does my moon sign mean?
Traditionally it is read as your emotional blueprint: how you process feelings, what restores you, and what you need from home and close relationships. The reading under your result summarises the traditional interpretation for your sign.
Is my moon sign the same in Vedic astrology?
Not usually. This calculator uses the tropical (Western) zodiac. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac - your Rashi - which is currently about 24 degrees behind, so your Vedic moon sign is often the previous sign.
