Rising Sign Calculator: Find Your Ascendant

Your rising sign (the ascendant) is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the minute and place you were born. It changes about every two hours, which makes it the most personal of the Big Three - and the reason it needs your exact birth time and birth city. Enter both below.

Step 1 - Enter your birth date and exact birth timeStep 2 - Pick your birth city (or enter its coordinates)Step 3 - Read your rising sign, its degree and the first impression you make

What is a rising sign (ascendant)?

Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth moment. Astrologers read it as your outer style: the first impression you make, your natural approach to new situations, and the lens through which you meet the world - the 'cover' to your sun sign's 'book'.

Because the Earth turns once a day, the whole zodiac takes a turn on the horizon every 24 hours, so the ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours (faster for some signs, slower for others, depending on latitude). Two people born on the same day in the same hospital can have completely different rising signs - which is why this is the one placement that cannot be found from a date alone.

How this calculator works

The calculator converts your local birth time to Universal Time using your birth city's time zone rules for that date (daylight saving included), works out the local sidereal time - how far the sky had turned at your birthplace - and applies the standard spherical-astronomy formula for the ascendant with your latitude. It also reports the exact degree, and warns you when that degree sits close enough to a sign edge for a small time error to matter. Nothing is uploaded; the whole calculation happens in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?

Not reliably. The ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes and passes through all twelve signs in a day, so without a time there are twelve possible answers. If you cannot find your time anywhere, your sun and moon signs are still available - try the Sun, Moon & Rising calculator, which shows what can be known without a time.

How accurate does my birth time need to be?

Within about 15-20 minutes is usually enough to get the right sign, unless your ascendant is very close to a sign change - the calculator flags that case and names the neighbouring sign. A birth certificate or hospital record beats family memory, which is often rounded to the nearest hour.

What if my birth city is not in the list?

Choose the coordinates option: enter the latitude and longitude of your birthplace (any map app shows them) and its UTC offset on your birth date, remembering daylight saving if it applied. A nearby listed city in the same time zone also works well for most births.

Is the ascendant the same as the rising sign?

Yes - ascendant is the technical term, rising sign the everyday one. Both mean the zodiac degree (and sign) on the eastern horizon at birth.

Why do I get a different rising sign on another site?

Usually a time zone or daylight-saving difference: a one-hour error moves the ascendant by about 15 degrees, which easily changes the sign near an edge. This calculator applies your birth city's historical time zone rules for your exact date. Check also that both sites were given the same birth time.

ToolFoxHub astrology calculators are for entertainment and self-reflection. Astrology is a symbolic tradition, not a science, and these readings are traditional interpretations, not facts or advice. Positions use the tropical zodiac and standard astronomical formulas (Jean Meeus) computed in your browser - nothing you enter leaves your device. Results agree with professional ephemerides for the great majority of births; if you were born in the short window when a body was changing sign, your exact birth time and place decide the answer, and the calculator says so when that is the case.
