45 out of 60. 38 out of 45. 17 out of 20. Raw scores tell you almost nothing until they become percentages - and percentages are what grades, offers and cut-offs are written in.
The one formula behind every grade
Divide your score by the total, then multiply by 100. So 45 out of 60 is 45 / 60 x 100 = 75%. In most US schools that is a C, in the UK it is typically a strong 2:1 level mark at university and a grade 6-7 at GCSE.
Percentage change: the number shops hope you skip
A price rising from $80 to $100 is not a 20% rise, it is 25% - the increase is divided by the OLD number. The same applies to pay rises, rent increases and grade improvements across terms.
Do it in two seconds
Type your two numbers into a percentage calculator instead of doing long division under exam stress. It also removes the classic mistake of dividing the wrong way round.
