'Write 2 pages' sounds simple until you open a blank document. Teachers count words, not pages - so here is the honest conversion table students search for before every deadline.
The standard page to word numbers
A single-spaced page holds roughly 500 words. A double-spaced page, the format most US and UK teachers demand, holds about 250 words. So a 2 page double-spaced essay is about 500 words, a 5 page essay is about 1,250 words and a 10 page paper is roughly 2,500 words.
Why your count may differ
Font size, margins and headings all change how much fits on a page. Times New Roman 12pt with 1 inch margins is the standard behind those numbers. If your document looks longer or shorter, trust the word count, not the page count.
Hit the limit without padding
Write freely first, then paste the draft into a word counter. Trimming 10% from a finished draft is far easier than counting as you write, and your essay will read better for it.
