Every December, the same question lands in millions of search bars: what is the last day to ship for Christmas? Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, 25 December, which squeezes the final week — most carriers are aiming to deliver by Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December. This guide is written for people sending gifts to family and friends (not for online sellers): every last day to ship or post for Christmas 2026 in the US and the UK, in plain language, on one page.
One rule before the dates: a deadline is the last day to hand the parcel to the carrier, not the day to order the gift. If you are still shopping, leave at least a day or two for the shop to pack and dispatch — our Christmas Gift Finder even flags which gifts still work as the days run out.
The last days to ship at a glance
- US, cheapest and slowest: ship by Thursday 17 December (USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail; FedEx and UPS long-distance ground lanes close the same day).
- US, standard: USPS Priority Mail by Friday 18 December.
- US, fast: USPS Priority Mail Express by Saturday 19 December; FedEx Express Saver and UPS 3 Day Select by Monday 21 December.
- US, last-minute: 2-day services by Tuesday 22 December, overnight by Wednesday 23 December, and FedEx SameDay in a few cities on Thursday 24 December.
- UK: Royal Mail 2nd Class by Friday 18 December, 1st Class by Monday 21 December, Special Delivery Guaranteed by Wednesday 23 December.
USPS Christmas deadlines 2026
For delivery before Christmas Day within the contiguous US, USPS recommends:
- Ground Advantage: Thursday 17 December
- First-Class Mail (cards and letters): Thursday 17 December
- Priority Mail: Friday 18 December
- Priority Mail Express: Saturday 19 December
Sending to Alaska or Hawaii? Ground Advantage closes a day earlier there — Wednesday 16 December. And if your gift is going abroad, USPS international services close much earlier (most by 9–16 December), so international parcels are a November-and-early-December job, not a last-week one.
FedEx Christmas deadlines 2026
FedEx dates target delivery by Thursday 24 December:
- Ground Economy: Tuesday 15 December
- Ground and Home Delivery: it depends on how far the parcel travels — Thursday 17 December for five-day lanes, stretching to Wednesday 23 December for one-day lanes. Check your route on fedex.com; a parcel crossing the country is a 17 December parcel.
- Express Saver: Monday 21 December
- 2Day and 2Day AM: Tuesday 22 December
- First, Priority and Standard Overnight: Wednesday 23 December
- SameDay: Thursday 24 December, in limited metro areas
UPS Christmas deadlines 2026
UPS dates also target delivery by Thursday 24 December:
- Ground: there is no single national date — it is set by the distance between you and the recipient. Short lanes run almost to Christmas week; coast-to-coast lanes effectively close around Thursday 17 December. UPS’s own time-and-cost tool gives the exact day for your ZIP codes.
- 3 Day Select: Monday 21 December
- 2nd Day Air: Tuesday 22 December
- Next Day Air: Wednesday 23 December
One UPS detail worth knowing: there is no Ground pickup on Christmas Eve, and Air pickups on 24 December must be arranged in advance — by 18 December. Dropping off at a UPS location avoids that trap.
Royal Mail last posting dates, Christmas 2026 (UK)
For post travelling within the UK, Royal Mail’s last recommended posting dates are:
- 2nd Class and 2nd Class Signed For: Friday 18 December
- Tracked 48: Saturday 19 December
- 1st Class, 1st Class Signed For and Tracked 24: Monday 21 December
- Special Delivery Guaranteed: Wednesday 23 December — the only service that guarantees next-day delivery, and your true last resort
Parcelforce Worldwide follows close behind: express48 by Monday 21 December and express10, expressAM and express24 by Tuesday 22 December. Remote postcodes — parts of the Highlands, islands and Northern Ireland — can need a day or two more, so post earlier if your card is heading somewhere scenic. Royal Mail calls these “last recommended” dates and notes they can change; if a parcel really matters, check royalmail.com before you post.
Ship-by is not order-by: the trap that catches everyone
The deadlines above assume the parcel is already in your hands. A gift ordered online has to be picked, packed and handed over first, and shops get slower exactly when you are in a hurry. As a working rule: order standard-delivery gifts by about 14–15 December in the US and UK if they must travel by ground services, and treat anything ordered after 20 December as an express-or-collect gift. Our guide to last-minute Christmas gifts is built for exactly this situation — digital gifts, same-day pickup and gifts that need no postage at all.
Missed the last day? You still have options
Take a breath — a late parcel is not a ruined Christmas. In rough order of practicality:
- Overnight and SameDay services run to 23–24 December in the US, and Royal Mail Special Delivery to 23 December in the UK. Expensive, but they exist for this week.
- Buy near the recipient. Order from a shop in their town with local pickup, and let them collect it — no carrier involved.
- Send the gift digitally. E-gift cards, subscriptions and experiences arrive by email in seconds.
- Send a beautiful card now, gift after. A personal Christmas card with your name and photo takes a minute to make and lands instantly on WhatsApp — it says the thought arrived on time, even if the parcel follows on the 27th.
How to make sure it actually arrives
Post a day earlier than the deadline whenever you can — December weather and record volumes eat buffers for breakfast. Hand parcels over before the day’s collection cut-off, not just on the right date; a parcel dropped at 6pm may travel as if posted the next day. Print the address clearly (or use the carrier’s label), include a return address, and keep the receipt until the parcel lands. If you are counting down the days as well as the deadlines, our live Christmas countdown shows exactly how much time is left.
Questions people ask
What is the last day to ship with USPS for Christmas 2026?
Thursday 17 December for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, Friday 18 December for Priority Mail, and Saturday 19 December for Priority Mail Express (contiguous US).
Can I still send a parcel on 23 December?
Yes, with the fastest services: FedEx and UPS overnight services in the US, and Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed in the UK, all accept parcels on Wednesday 23 December for Christmas Eve delivery. FedEx SameDay runs in a few US cities even on the 24th.
What is the last posting date for 2nd Class Royal Mail?
Friday 18 December 2026 for delivery within the UK. 1st Class senders have until Monday 21 December.
Do these dates guarantee delivery?
No — they are the carriers’ recommended last days, checked against their published 2026 holiday schedules in October 2026, and the carriers note they can change. Weather, volume and remote addresses can still delay a parcel, which is why posting a day early is the oldest and best advice there is.
