You save a picture from the web, try to open it in your editor or upload it to a form, and nothing accepts it. The file ends in .webp - here is what happened and the 10 second fix.
What WebP actually is
WebP is Google's modern image format. It makes files about 30% smaller than JPG at similar quality, which is why websites love it. The problem is not your computer - many editors, older apps and official portals still only accept JPG or PNG.
Convert, don't screenshot
Screenshotting a WebP picture destroys its quality and size. Converting it keeps every pixel: WebP to PNG is lossless, and WebP to JPG gives you a slightly smaller file that opens absolutely everywhere.
Which format should you choose?
Choose JPG for photos and for uploading to forms and social media. Choose PNG when the image has text, logos or sharp edges, or when a portal specifically asks for PNG. The conversion happens in your browser, so even personal documents stay private.
