About this CGPA to percentage calculator

If you study in Pakistan, you have probably been asked for your percentage on a job form, a scholarship application or a foreign university portal — even though your transcript only shows a CGPA on the 4.00 scale. This calculator answers that question in both of the ways it is normally answered in Pakistan: the quick linear method (CGPA × 25) and the HEC band method, shown side by side so you can see exactly where they agree and where they differ. It also works in reverse: type a percentage and find out which CGPA band it falls in. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded or stored.

How to convert CGPA to percentage in Pakistan

  1. Enter your CGPA. Type a value between 0.00 and 4.00, for example 3.50.
  2. Press Calculate. You get two results at once: the simple method and the HEC band minimum, with the band label shown.
  3. Pick the right one for your form. If the form asks for an HEC-equivalent percentage, use the band result; if it just wants a straight conversion, the simple result is the one to use.
  4. Going the other way? Switch the direction to “Percentage → CGPA band” and type your percentage to see the matching band.

Why the two results are different

The simple method treats the 4.00 scale as a straight line: percentage = CGPA ÷ 4 × 100, which is the same as CGPA × 25. Every small rise in CGPA raises the percentage by the same amount. The HEC method works differently. It groups CGPAs into bands and assigns one fixed minimum percentage to each whole band, so everyone inside the same band gets the same percentage no matter where in the band they sit. That is why the HEC figure is usually lower than the simple figure — it is a floor for the band, not a point-by-point conversion.

Worked examples: a CGPA of 3.5 gives 87.5% by the simple method (3.5 × 25) but 80% by the HEC method, because 3.5 falls in the 3.34 – 3.66 band. A CGPA of 3.0 gives 75% by the simple method but 71% by the HEC method, because 3.0 falls in the 2.67 – 3.00 band. Neither answer is “wrong” — they are answers to two different questions, so use the one your form actually asks for.

HEC CGPA to percentage band table

The table below follows the HEC policy guidelines as reported by multiple Pakistani education sources. It is the conversion most commonly cited in Pakistan, but please treat it as a guide rather than an official document: always confirm with your own university or transcript before using it for an official application, since your university's own rules take priority. Note also that some universities use their own formulas — variants used by institutions such as UCP and GCU have been reported — so if your university publishes its own conversion, use that one instead.

Warning: do not use the (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 formula

A formula sometimes shared online — (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 — is wrong and should not be used for any application. It gives absurd results: for a CGPA of 3.5 it produces just 27.5%, which would make a strong student look like a failing one. If you see this formula on a blog or a social media post, ignore it and use one of the two methods above instead.

Frequently asked questions

Which result should I use on a job or university application in Pakistan?

In most cases, the HEC band minimum is the figure Pakistani employers and institutions expect when they ask for a percentage. But the safest move is to check what your own university prints on your transcript or degree supplement — if it states a percentage, use that exact figure, and if it states its own conversion rule, follow that.

Why is my HEC percentage lower than CGPA × 25?

Because the HEC method gives you the minimum percentage for your whole band, not a value scaled to your exact CGPA. A CGPA of 3.5 and a CGPA of 3.66 both sit in the same band, so both get 80%, even though the simple method would give them 87.5% and 91.5%. The gap is built into the band system, not a mistake in the calculator.

Is the (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 formula correct?

No. It is a formula that circulates online but it has no basis in the HEC guidelines, and its answers are plainly wrong — 27.5% for a 3.5 CGPA is the clearest proof. Do not use it on any form.

Does this calculator work for universities outside Pakistan?

Partly. The simple CGPA × 25 method works on any 4.00 scale, anywhere in the world. The HEC band table, however, is specific to Pakistan — other countries and universities have their own conversion rules, so use the band result only for Pakistani applications.
